Recent surveys connected to Project Phoenix—and many individual communications through phone calls; emails; postings on Ning, Facebook, LinkedIn, and STC’s Notebook; and leadership input—tell us members want:
Members want STC to be a voice for the profession. They want STC to create a climate where technical communicators are valued—and hired—for their expertise. And members want a sense of passion—of caring about the profession and each other as professionals.
The communities suggested the Basic membership package should include one chapter and one SIG membership. Others suggested added value, such as the new Gold membership package introduced for 2010 with a host of benefits bundled into the dues.
Our new Basic and returning Gold packages provide more value for your dues dollar.
STC has worked hard to create a climate where technical communicators are valued—and hired—for their expertise. This past year, work with the Bureau of Labor Statistics resulted in a separate chapter for technical writers in the Occupation Outlook Handbook, an essential reference document for corporations. This means for the first time the BLS has acknowledged technical writers are distinct from other writers.
This directly benefits STC members because corporate Human Resource departments use the BLS data to determine salaries. In general, the practices of large companies define the market and the market determines the typical rate of compensation for technical communicators. STC's work with BLS will impact your salary and push companies to recognize the value of technical communicators.
Ready-made Network of Peers—Members tell us the chance to network with other members is one of their most prized benefits. The chance to bounce ideas off one another, learn about job opportunities, hear about project shortcuts, and try out new software or tools is especially valuable.
Chapter Membership—Having that local connection to peers brings practical and sustainable value to your membership. Most chapters schedule regular meetings, host social events, and publish a newsletter. STC has 114 chapters.
SIG Membership—STC has 22 special interest groups organized by work function and industry focus.
The online renewal form will give you the opportunity to select which chapters and SIGs you would like to join.

As a member of STC, you agree to all terms outlined in the STC ByLaws.
(Amended October 2009)
Email is the official communication method between STC and its members. Please pay particular attention to the section pertaining to your preferences. These can be changed at any point in the year. You will be prompted to check boxes indicating your preference to receive or not receive various types of information via email to your work, home, or other email addresses. Up to three email addresses may be stored in the member record. For example, you may wish to have the election ballot (required by Bylaws) sent to your work email, messages containing newsletters or general announcements to your home email, and emails from STC-related vendors to a third email address.
A body of knowledge defines a profession and separates it from being a trade. STC has made significant advances in outlining the fundamental knowledge of the profession through the continued development of the Technical Communicator Body of Knowledge (TCBOK). Not only will the STC TCBOK define your profession, but it will include tools, templates, and the ability for you to do your job better and help you be more successful.
STC offers the option with online renewals to pay for dues in four equal installments. The monthly installment payments will be automatically deducted from your credit card (or credit card backed debit card) and will begin the first business day after your application has been processed. They will continue approximately every 30 days for the next three consecutive months.
